The mountain pine beetle (MPB) epidemic
has decimated the British Columbia Interior lodgepole pine resource.
Increased log checking and lower long-term harvest volumes are affecting
conversion economics for sawmills. In response to these challenges,
FPInnovations and B.C. Forestry Innovation Investment have developed
the ‘Return to Log Calculator for Checked MPB Logs’.
This software was designed to help sawmills measure the impact of
the epidemic on their bottom line. It uses FPInnovations’
proprietary sawmilling software Optitek™ to simulate how check
severity affects the outturn of individual lumber grades. After
entering costs, prices and mill production statistics, the software
calculates break-even costs for different logs, operating margins
and lumber recoveries.
Armed with this information, sawmills will be better prepared for
the challenges posed by the MPB epidemic.
The ‘Return to Log Calculator for Checked MPB Logs’
is only available within Canada. |
